2009-2010 Tryout Scoring

Andover Boys Traveling Basketball
Try-Outs: Set-Up, Skills Evaluated and Scoring

Each player that attends the two try-out sessions will be evaluated on combination of objective scoring (basketball skills as noted below) and subjective scoring by an impartial group of evaluators.

Players will be rewarded with their best score for each section of the try-out and therefore strongly encouraged to attend both sessions to improve on their score.

The total points are broken down as follows:

  • 30 Points (Objective)
  • 65 Points (Subjective)
  • 5 Points (Hustle)

100 Total Points

Objective (30 Points)

The first part of the try-out process involves players going through six stations. Each station is five points and therefore six stations multiplied by five points equals a perfect score of 30 points. The scoring is done on curve and therefore every player receives a minimum of one point per station and a maximum of five points.

  • Dribbling Speed Score
Players are timed on how quickly they can dribble down the court – left hand, right hand and cross over dribbles are used in this drill.

  • Ball Rotation Score
Players are timed on how many times they can rotate the ball around their waist or through their legs.

  • Quickness
In this drill, the players will shuffle back and forth across the lane and ranked on the number of times they can go back and forth during the drill.

  • Mikan Drill
Traditional Mikan layup/hook shot drill where the player will alternate shooting from the right side and left side of the basket. Number of baskets made will be recorded.

  • Elbow Shot
Five shots from each elbow (intersection of free throw line and free throw lane) for a total of ten shots. Number of shots made will be recorded.

  • Free Throws
Each player will shot five free throws. Number of shots made will be recorded.

Subjective (65 Points)

In addition to the objective scoring, players will also be evaluated on some subjective aspects of their game. The following will be evaluated at the same time as the objective stations noted above. The maximum number of points in this section is twenty.

  • Rebounding Subjective
The evaluators will be observing box out technique, exploding for the rebound and overall rebounding skill.

  • Lay-Up Subjective
Players will be evaluated on their form for both left hand and right hand layups.

  • Free Throw Subjective
At the same time that they are being evaluated on how many free throws they make (objective), the player will be evaluated for overall shooting form. The player may score zero in objective for free throws but could score five points in the subjective section.

  • Elbow Shot Subjective
Similar to the free throws, players will be evaluating for shooting form from each elbow.

After the drills (objective and subjective) are completed, the players will move to simulated game situations of 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 scrimmaging. The evaluators will split the players into teams and they may adjust the make up of teams throughout the scrimmage session.

A minimum of four and maximum of six evaluators will be watching the scrimmages and evaluating each player for offense and defense. A total of 45 points is available in this section.

  • Offensive Subjective
Each player will be ranked on a scale of 1-5 by each evaluator. The average of the scores for the player will be multiplied by 4.5. Therefore, somebody who averages a five from all the evaluators will receive a 22.5 whereas somebody who averages a one will receive 4.5 points.

  • Defensive Subjective
Similar to the offensive subjective description above but on the defensive side of the game.

Hustle (5 Points)

During the 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 sessions, the evaluators will also be looking at the overall hustle of each player. The players will be ranked on a scale of 1-5 by each evaluator and the average will be calculated for each player. This piece is not weighted and therefore 1-5 points are available.
